Newport is the ideal situation for a data centre, with an excellent road network including the M4 motorway. Cardiff International Airport is 25 miles, Bristol Airport is 39 miles and London Heathrow is a 2 hours drive. There is also the Great Western main railway line which passes through the heart of the city. This in turn is fully connected to the South Wales main line providing easy access to UK destinations such as London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds and Newcastle. London is 110 minutes by rail and trains run at half hourly intervals.
There are over 500 international companies in Wales employing approximately 80,000 people and since 1983 international companies have invested an estimated £14bn in Wales. Newport itself is a success story as the economic engine of South East Wales and one of the prime investment locations in the UK. Between 1986 and 2000 the city attracted more than £3 billion worth of inward investment, creating more than 10,000 jobs and boosting the local economy, much of it from international companies at the very cutting edge of high technology and the service industry.
Evidence of the regeneration is overwhelming in the amount of new infrastructure, building refurbishment, improved transportation links and improvements being made in and around the city. The main employers are the Passport Office for the South and West of the UK, the Wales Headquarters of the Charity Commission and British Red Cross, the Headquarters of the UK Office for National Statistics, the Headquarters of the United Kingdom Intellectual Property Office (formerly Patent Office) and a large Panasonic manufacturing plant. Newport will also be home to the vibrant new multimillion pound City Centre Campus for the University of Wales. Newport will host The 2010 Ryder Cup at The Celtic Manor Resort, one of Europe's leading golf and business resorts.
